North Bay, ON
Good intercontinental trip yesterday. After leaving Newberry, we continued on US 2 and headed for the Canadian border. Same beautiful scenery, glimpses of the lake and rivers feeding it, along with large forests - some of which were lumber crops. You could tell because I don't think the good Lord grows trees in parallel lines. Our wildlife consisted of dead deer and live wild turkeys. I think the turkeys are smarter crossing the road because they wait patiently by the side of the road until traffic passes.
US 2 goes south and M28 continues east to Sault Ste Marie. We decided not to take I75 north to the Canadian border, rather choosing M28 until it ended, and we turned left , heading for Sault Ste Marie on the Michigan side. Neat traveling through that town as it passed locks, old buildings and the largest tower in the state of Michigan. Seems like they are obsessed in the Midwest with building the biggest of everything - partridges, Paul Bunyan, towers, buffalo, etc. Fed Zelda because we were not sure how long the line was to go through immigration. Never did find anyplace on the US side to feed ourselves.]
Great old two-lane huge bridge over the locks. The view is fantastic and there was a big cruise ship going through the lock, along with smaller craft. First toll we have had to pay so far, but better than going through Chicago and all the related toll roads. Not too long a wait and it was made even faster when they opened a third lane. Wended our way through Sault Ste Marie, Ontario and finally decided to eat at a Tim Horton's. Tim Horton's are like Starbucks - there seems to be one every mile, if not closer.
Got on the Queen's Highway, Route 17 which we thought was going to be a four-lane highway - NOT! Similar to US 2, but still beautiful scenery with rolling farmlands. Judging from where the road cuts through hills, the granite layer is not far from the surface. Went around Sudbury which we have visited before, but decided to continue on as it was fairly early in the afternoon.
Ended up in North Bay which is on the shore of Lake Nipissing (good thing they used an i instead of an o). As we drove to the hotel, we were on a lake shore drive which afforded us great views of the lake, play areas, beaches, etc. The people take full advantage of their good fortune in having such a beautiful lake at their doorstep.
Getting closer to our ultimate destination. I think we have one more night on the road (near Montreal) before we arrive at Jay Peak, VT which is the site of the wedding. Sure hope the rain we drove through doesn't conflict with the wedding. The rain was much heavier down south because the local news reported much flooding, even closing parts of I-94 further south in Michigan.
